My Approach

I primarily work with clients using a Cognitive-Behavioural (CBT) approach, which focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. The goal in CBT isn’t to “think positively” or pretend that problems in life don’t exist. Instead, we work to recognize unhelpful patterns in the thought-feeling-behaviour relationship that contribute to a person’s problems and learn more helpful ways to think and act. I also work with clients using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients learn how to change their relationship with thoughts and feelings so that they can live in a more values-based and meaningful way. I also practice from evidence-based modalities for PTSD, including Cognitive Processing Therapy.

Above all else, the most important part of counselling is the therapeutic relationship between myself and my clients. My goal is to offer compassion, empathy, and validation so that my clients can safely share their stories, gain insight into patterns that may be holding them back, and learn new ways of being that align with what is important to them.

Referrals

My experience and training allows me to work with certain challenges, but there are times when a person’s main focus area for therapy is an area that I don’t currently work with. In these cases, I’m glad to provide referrals to providers who may be best suited for the following areas:

  • Addictions

  • Body-focused repetitive disorders

  • EMDR treatment

  • Forensic concerns

  • Obsessive compulsive disorders

  • Personality disorders

  • Psychosis

  • Third-party claims (insurance, WCB, WorkSafeBC)
